Eschewing obvious quotes or cliched references, the minimalist chamberfolk trio from Oslo blend the brittle, drily poetic string stirrings of Norwegian tradition with the nocturnal eroticism of Jazz, the rhythmical patterns of Steve Reich and the sparse canvases of Morton Feldman.
Pieces evolve slowly and almost imperceptibly, as Percussionist Amund Sjølie Sveen places sustained Vibraphone-droplets and glassy harmonics on top of the closely intertwined melodic motives and austere chord progressions of Anne Hytta’s Fiddle and Sigrun Eng’s Cello. As part of a deep and trance-like process, the band carefully and slowly arrive at a resonant, sonorous continuum of sounds that is as concise as it is poetic.
February 2011 they released their second album straum, stille on the reknowned German label Ozella Music.
Anne Hytta på hardingfele, Sigrun Eng på cello og Amund Sjølie Sveen på vibrafon og glass står for en sjelden instrumentasjon i den store bandfloraen, og musikken låter også umiskjennelig som Slagr, et sted innimellom akustisk framføring og ambient lydlandskap. Elementer av Steve Reichs rytmiske mønstre og Morton Feldmans malende, sparsomme stykker kan oppleves i musikken, men først og fremst hentes inspirasjon til Slagrs nykomponerte musikk fra folkemusikkens smidige håndtering av melodilinjene; melismer, ornamenter og stadig sirlige små avveier fra melodiens fast opptrukne linjer.
På scenen har Slagr eksperimentert med ulike konsertformer for å få publikum til virkelig å synke inn i musikken, og konserter med stearinlys som eneste belysning, liggekonserter og konserter med video og fluktstoler er blant konsertformene på ”repertoaret”.
